Al-Jazeera holds global protest day over staff held in Egypt

April 9, 2014 at 1:17 pm

Journalists working for local and foreign media outlets staged a silent vigil in front of Al-Jazeera Network’s headquarters, highlighting the need to respect the freedom of journalism, Al-Jazeera correspondent Tamer Al-Meshal reported.

The journalists stressed that laws and customs guarantee their freedoms in all democratic governments, noting that the journalists in Gaza suffered repeated violations committed by Israel, including killings and detention.

The vigil was organised in the context of an international campaign launched by Al-Jazeera in more than thirty countries in solidarity with the four journalists detained in Egypt in order to raise global awareness of the suffering of journalists since the “military coup”.

The journalists expressed their strong condemnation of the gagging and repressive policies adopted by some Arab regimes against journalists in different countries.
