Britain warns citizens against travelling to Sinai and Upper Egypt

April 9, 2014 at 10:59 am

Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office has issued a statement advising British nationals against travelling to the Sinai Peninsula and the provinces of Beni Suef, Minya, Assiut, Sohag and the South Sinai region, with the exception of the Sharm El-Sheikh resort.

The warning follows a bomb attack against a tourist bus on Sunday that killed three Koreans along with the Egyptian bus driver while on their way to Taba city, near Aqaba.

The Foreign Office said, through its Middle East twitter account, that: “terrorist elements who continue to plot random attacks that occur without warning pose a major threat in the region. The terrorists could target the demonstrators and the Egyptian authorities as well as foreigners.”

According to the official statement: “The British Foreign Office is primarily concerned with the safety of British citizens in Egypt. The office shall constantly review its travel tips based on information provided by our experts in Egypt.”

The statement noted that Egyptian authorities have taken strict security measures to protect the Sharm El-Sheikh resort by deploying troops from the Egyptian army in the Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport to run intense security checks, making the resort a safe destination for travel.
