Joint military drills between Egypt and the UAE started on Sunday in the Emirates. The drills, which include marine, air and ground exercises, are set to continue for two weeks.

A spokesperson of the Egyptian Armed Forces tweeted that: “These drills affirm the historical and strategic relations between the two counties in all fields.”

According to the army spokesperson, Egyptian military forces travelled to the UAE to take part in two weeks of training exercises dubbed “Zayed 1”.

The collaboration will include tactical training and exchanging expertise in all specialities between both sides. “It will include exercises to defend and attack vital targets,” he tweeted.

In addition, the drills will also include the use of live ammunition, as well as fighter jets and multi-purpose aircrafts. A number of destroyers and other naval military forces, in addition to paratroopers, are reportedly going to take part, too.

The UAE has consistently expressed strong support for Egypt since the military-backed regime ousted Egypt’s first democratically elected president in a coup last July.
