Generous donation from UAE to Egypt to build electricity plant

The UAE has donated 210 billion Egyptian pounds to help Egypt build a solar energy electricity plant in the Siwa Oasis, 50 kilometres east of the Libyan border and 560 kilometres from Cairo.

Head of New and Renewable Energy Department of the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity Mahmoud Atiyya said that the plant would generate 10-megawatts.

This amount of electricity, according to Atiyya, is enough to illuminate all far residential areas, which are not connected to the Egyptian electricity network. These areas are now being illuminated by diesel generators.

Media reports claim work on the plant would start within a month.

The UAE’s Al-Bayan newspaper reported Atiyya saying today that his team started preparing feasibility studies for the project and it would announce bidding immediately when the plans are ready.

Atiyya noted that this project comes as part of the Egyptian government’s plans to develop the Siwa Oasis.
