Saudi Arabia is surprised by 'doubtful' Russian support to Syrian regime

Saudi Arabia expressed its surprise over the “doubtful” support of Russia to the Syrian regime, as well as it condemned being blamed by Moscow for supporting oppressed Syrian citizens, senior source in Saudi foreign ministry has said.

The source said that the Syrian regime used heavy military weapons, including internationally banned weapons such as chemical weapons, against its citizens. He said that the Syrian regime does not respect any international or humanitarian principle in dealing with its people.

“In the light of the approved and clear facts [about the violation of human rights by the Syrian regime], Russian support to the oppressive regime is surprising,” the source said. “It [Russia] undermined all attempts of the UNSC to politically resolve to the Syrian conflict,” it added.

The source continued: “Russia supported the attempts of the Syrian regime to undermine Geneva II talks and helped derailing it from achieving its planned goals.” Main goal should have been achieved in Geneva II was the formation of a transitional government.

According to the source, the continuous Russian support to the Syrian regime is the main encouragement to continue “oppression” against Syrians and keeping the people under raging fire for the third consecutive year.

Concluding his remarks, the source said that amongst the “disappointment” of the inability of the international bodies to solve the crisis, Russian support to the Syrian regime raises many questions. Doing this, Russia lost the sympathy of the Arabs, who felt being abandoned by it.
