Hundreds of students demonstrated around the main building of Cairo University demanding the downfall of the coup regime and a halt of the academic year until the return of legitimacy.
The demonstrations yesterday lead to classes between students, who were throwing stones and fireworks, and the Giza security forces, who were firing tear gas.
The clashes took place around the campus building known as the “the dome building” and lead to traffic disruptions and chaos in the area between Cairo University and the Giza security directorate.
Since President Mohammed Morsi was ousted from power last July, a number of universities in Egypt have witnessed acts of violence and clashes between student who support Morsi and those who don’t, as well as clashes between students and security forces. This has led to the referral of hundreds of students to disciplinary councils and subsequently their expulsion from university.
