Egyptian satirist's show blocked for second time

April 12, 2014 at 10:51 am

For the second week in a row, the signal of Dubai-based satellite channel MBC Misr was jammed on Friday during the broadcast of satirical show Al-Bernameg. The broadcaster apologised to viewers, saying that the signal had been jammed deliberately. It uploaded the episode onto its website before the end of the show.

The programme’s creator and star, Bassem Youssef, has been subject to fierce criticism due to his controversial position on the massacres of thousands of civilians after the July 3 coup. He appeared to blame and mock the victims. A song aired during one of his first episodes gloated over the killing of Muslim Brotherhood protesters in the Rabaa Al-Adawiyyah massacre.

Following accusations of double-standards, Youssef started to mock the ruling military-backed authorities, which are believed to be behind the jamming of the broadcast signal.
