Egypt's Coptic Pope says Arab Spring plotted by 'malicious hands'

April 12, 2014 at 12:27 pm

The Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Pope slammed Arab Spring revolts as “an Arab winter plotted by malicious hands to fragment the Arab World.”

In an interview with the Kuwaiti Al-Watan television channel, Pope Tawadros said that the Egyptian Church “was keen on revealing facts to all Western delegations which visited Egypt during these events [the January 25 revolution]”.

“The so-called Arab Spring was neither a spring nor an autumn, but rather a winter plotted by malicious hands to fragment Arab countries into small powerless regions,” he said.

Pope Tawadros has been one of the major supporters of the Egyptian military coup of July 3 against the first democratically-elected civilian president of Egypt. Moreover, observers believe that the Coptic Orthodox Church has played a major role in publicizing the coup outside Egypt.
