Egypt's former presidential candidate Shafik criticises Al-Sisi in a leaked recording

April 12, 2014 at 10:34 am

A leaked audio recording acquired exclusively by Rassd News Network on Wednesday included a conversation by the former presidential candidate and Mubarak’s last Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik wherein he attacked the army for its approval of Al-Sisi’s presidency bid.

In the recording, Shafik expressed his anger at the Egyptian army’s so-called authorization for Defence Minister Al-Sisi to run for presidency, confirming that he will quit the presidential race which he described as a “farce”.

The recording revealed sharp disagreements among the military coup leaders. Shafik expected that the army would manipulate election results in favor of Al-Sisi, and that the results are therefore predetermined. He also said that the Egyptian state is like “an employee for Al-Sisi”.

He criticised the army’s behavior as indicative of “lack of experience”.

Moreover, Shafik named a number of Egyptian pro-coup figures, including the journalist Mostafa Bakri and Judge Tahani Al-Gibali, saying that their only interest is to “earn money” by voicing support for the military.

Shafik had fled Egypt to the UAE after his loss in the 2012 presidential elections against the former president Mohamed Morsi. He faced a number of corruption charges and failed to provide any evidence that would exonerate him.
