Israel's UN envoy: PA violating international conventions by seeking to join UN agencies

April 12, 2014 at 3:23 pm

Israel’s envoy to the UN Ron Prosor was quoted by Israel Army Radio as saying that the Palestinian Authority is violating the basic articles of the same UN conventions that it is seeking to apply to in its pursuit to join UN agencies.

Speaking at a conference organised by the Jerusalem Post newspaper in New York City, Prosor said: “Had the Palestinians bothered to read the applications to the various conventions they seek to join, they would understand that they are in blatant violation of the majority of their articles. They tend to forget the surprising concept that joining international treaties also includes obligations.”

Prosor also threatened reciprocal measures against the Palestinians if they seek action against Israel at the UN, noting that the fourth Geneva Convention, which the Palestinians are applying to join, obliges Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to condemn Hamas’s use of civilians as human shields when it fires rockets at Israel.
