Saudi Arabia slams Al-Maliki's 'aggressive and irresponsible' remarks

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia slammed on Monday Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki’s accusations that the Kingdom is “supporting terrorism in Iraq”, calling the remarks “aggressive and irresponsible”.

Saudi Arabia’s state news agency quoted an unnamed official as saying that Al-Maliki’s accusations are an attempt to cover up for his own personal failures, adding that: “Saudi Arabia is deeply dismayed and surprised by Al-Maliki’s aggressive and irresponsible remarks.”

Al-Maliki accused Riyadh of supporting terrorism in the region and around the world in a television interview last Saturday.

The Saudi official explained that, “Al-Maliki blames others to cover up for his own personal failures, which have put Iraq under the mercy of regional parties that are igniting unprecedented sectarian strife in Iraq,” in an apparent reference to Iran.

The source pointed out that Al-Maliki’s policies threaten Iraq’s national unity and territorial sovereignty, stressing that the prime minister “knows very well the Kingdom’s clear and unequivocal position against terrorism in all its forms and whatever its source.”

The official concluded by saying that Al-Maliki should have adopted policies that would put an end to the chaos and violence in Iraq, which is “increasing on a daily basis due to his government’s sectarian and exclusionary policy against people”.
