Two Saudi border guards were killed in the southern region of Asir near the border with Yemen on Wednesday morning after an exchange of fire with unidentified gunmen; the Interior Ministry announced.

A ministry spokesperson told a Saudi state news agency yesterday that “the Saudi border patrol came under fire at 7am on Wednesday in Dhahran Al-Janoub in the southwestern province of Asir near the Saudi-Yemeni border from unidentified gunmen in the Yemeni territory.”

The spokesperson pointed out that the exchange of fire with the assailants led to the killing of Abdul Razak Al-Ghamdi and Mohammed Al-Qahtani” noting that the Saudi security authorities began an investigation into the attack in coordination with their Yemeni counterparts.

The spokesman did not say who was behind the attack but the borders are well known for hundreds of smuggling operations.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which resulted from the merger of the Saudi and Yemeni branches of the extremist organisation are also active in Yemen.
