Germany's Air Berlin suspends flights to Sharm Al-Sheikh, Egypt

April 18, 2014 at 9:41 am

Germany’s second largest airlines, Air Berlin, announced Monday it suspended its flights to the Egyptian Red Sea resort Sharm Al-Sheikh until 30 April due to the deteriorating security in the region.

Tourists who already bought tickets during the suspension period would be either refunded or could book seats on flights heading to Hurghada, another coastal sea on the Red Sea, until May 31, the company said in a statement.

According to the statement, Air Berlin made the decision in response to recent travel alerts from the German Foreign Ministry which strongly recommended avoiding trips to Sinai due to the risk of “terrorist attacks” there.

On February 16, three Korean tourists were killed in a bombing that targeted a tourist bus in Taba resort east of Sinai.
