Iranian parliament gives Rouhani 10 days to file a complaint against the US

President Hassan Rouhani has 10 days to file a complaint against the United States in the international arena after the US refused to grant entry visas to Iran’s representative to the United Nations Hamid Abu Talibi, the Iranian Shura Council said.

Washington accuses Abu Talibi of involvement with a group of students who stormed the US Embassy in Tehran in November 1979 and kidnapped 52 US members of staff for 444 days.

A member of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Mohammed Hassan Asfari said: “According to the international agreement ratified by the United Nations, it is incumbent upon the United States to cooperate with representatives of other countries.”

He told Iran’s Fars state news agency that “based on the agreement, the US administration should cooperate with the representatives of other states and issue entry visas for them and even provide them with a place of residence. The terms of the agreement explicitly prevent the US administration from blocking the appointment of other states’ representatives in the United Nations.”

Asfari pointed out that “the Iranian diplomatic body will follow-up on Abu Talibi’s attendance in the United Nations while the Iranian government will file a complaint against the US and insist on Abu Talibi’s appointment to the United Nations.

“The US government bears responsibility for this procedure and should be responded to in a manner that does not allow the US to repeat such practices,” he said.

“The US government cannot exploit the United Nations to achieve its own purposes,” Asfari said, pointing out that “if the Iranian government did not follow up with this issue, the Iranian Parliament will call the Foreign Minister for clarification.”
