Iran’s charge d’affaires in Cairo Mojtaba Amani yesterday denied media reports claiming the Egyptian Foreign Ministry summoned him over the diplomatic mission’s behaviour.

Amani told reporters at his residence that he was surprised with the media reports.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said earlier in a statement that it had summoned Amani who met Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ambassador Ahmed Ismail.

The Iranian diplomat told reporters that when he returned from a holiday in Tehran on Sunday, his office informed him that the Foreign Ministry had asked to meet with him.

Amani said: “I went and met with the Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs and discussed two issues: Egyptian-Iranian mutual cooperation, and the existence of a car with Iranian plate numbers which has been stopped while distributing pamphlets promoting for Shia faith… After I left I was surprised to hear news claiming I have been summoned by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.”
