Sabahi: June 30 was a setback for Egypt

April 18, 2014 at 9:19 am

Despite his participation in June 30 protests and endorsement of the July 3 military coup, Egyptian leftist presidency hopeful Hamdeen Sabahi said that Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi’s presidency campaign “includes many corrupt figures, most of whom hail from the Mubarak regime which was ousted by the youth in January 25.” In an interview with Al-Mayadeen channel, Sabahi said: “All corruption icons are in Sisi’s campaign and support him.”

Sabahi wondered: “Why didn’t Sisi take a stand regarding the support of the previous [Mubarak] regime to his presidency bid?”

Moreover, Sabahi addressed Egyptians saying that those who endorse Sisi now are the same people who were overthrown by the revolution “because of their injustice, transgressions and deviations.”

“The major mistakes of June 30, which turned out to be setback, are the excessive security measures, clamping down on freedoms and human rights, putting aside political solutions in favour of security ones, and failure of political forces to offer alternatives that would preserve the January 25 revolution,” he stressed.
