April 18, 2014 at 10:34 am

The “increasing violence in Libya negatively affects the reputation and economic development” of the country, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said yesterday.

In a statement issued about the kidnapping of the Jordanian ambassador in Tripoli, the UNSMIL said that “violence”, including kidnapping, is denounced by Libyans.

According to the statement, the UNSMIL has been exerting much effort in cooperation with the Libyan Authorities and other parties in order to release the ambassador. It said it is not saving any effort to get to a positive end to this crisis.

The UNSMIL noted that the United Nations Security Council had condemned the attack on the diplomatic convoy of the ambassador and called for the Libyan authorities to respect its international obligations and protect the diplomatic and consular missions.

The Libyan parliament condemned the kidnapping and affirmed that all related parties are working together in order to guarantee safe release of the ambassador.
