Kaag: 80 percent of Syria's chemical weapons destroyed or shipped out

May 3, 2014 at 2:52 pm

Head of the joint Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons-United Nations mission for the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons Sigrid Kaag announced Saturday that the Syrian regime shipped out or destroyed roughly 80 percent of its chemical weapons material, Reuters news agency reported.

According to Kaag, Syria could be able to meet the April 29 deadline if the momentum was sustained.

Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad agreed to dispose of his chemical weapons arsenal after pressures from the United States and Russia in the aftermath of the deadly chemical attack that claimed the lives of thousands of Syrian civilians.

Despite Assad’s claims that Syrian opposition was responsible for the attack, Washington and allies insisted that Assad was responsible, and that the attack was the worst in 25 years.
