Aboul Fotouh: Mass death sentences could lead to chaos in Egypt

May 4, 2014 at 11:29 am

The chairman of the Strong Egypt Party Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh criticised yesterday’s criminal court ruling that sentenced 37 citizens to death and 490 to life imprisonment, in addition to a preliminary death sentence issued against 683 Egyptians.

Aboul Fotouh said the rulings were passed “without evidence or eye witnesses or hearings or interrogation”.

He added that these mass death sentences, which demonstrate a disregard for human life, have no legal grounds. These frequent sentences violate Egyptian laws, international conventions and the values of justice and human rights, he said.

He added that the rulings lower the state in the eyes of the people and make them lose confidence in all state authorities, which could eventually lead to a vicious cycle of chaos.

“The Strong Egypt Party warns against the dangers of turning state authorises into supporting bodies for a military authority that does not understand politics or realise what the state is and what its responsibilities and scope of jurisdiction are, beyond the use of arms,” he said.
