Presidential elections in Syria slated for 3 June despite on-going war

May 4, 2014 at 9:29 am

Syrian state media reported on Monday that a presidential election in Syria will take place in six weeks, in which Bashar Al-Assad is likely to be granted a third term.

Reuters quoted the Syrian parliament’s chairman, Mohammed Jihad Al-Laham, as saying on state television that the elections will be held on 3 June.

Al-Assad has been facing a popular revolt against his rule for the past three years, during which time 150,000 martyrs were killed and about one third of the population displaced.

The international forces that support Al-Assad’s opponents have described the planned elections as a “mockery of democracy” and diplomats have warned that holding elections in the midst of war will be counterproductive to achieving a political solution to the crisis.
