Brotherhood says it seeks to bring down the coup, restore democracy

The Muslim Brotherhood said in a statement Friday that it seeks to reverse the coup and to return power to the people.

It accused the ruling regime of attempting to distort its image by claiming that it works against state institutions and the constitution, punishing its members with harsh penalties. “Military courts have always done so, but now civilian courts are also playing this role, going too far by labelling the Brotherhood a terrorist group.”

Yet, the group stressed that despite the “massive injustices” it faces, it will continue to “address people with wisdom until the truth is known.”

The Brotherhood added that its main objective in the current phase is to help bring power back to the people, to govern themselves democratically through elected representatives. It also emphasized the need for the army to return to its barracks and undertake its defence responsibilities away from politics.
