Israel renews state of emergency for the 66th time

May 15, 2014 at 1:00 pm

Israeli Knesset renewed on Wednesday the state of emergency in Israel, which has been in effect since 1948, Israeli radio reported.

The radio announcement reported that: “The need to this extension comes from the need for legislations connected with the state of emergency. These legislations will be terminated if the state of emergency ended.”

According to the Israeli radio, the Knesset has been working on the modification of these legislations for a long time, but it has not finished yet.

The state of emergency was renewed for 66th times consecutively. Some of the legislations connected to it are; the army budget, military laws, the power of the government, censorship on media, etc…

Previously, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz discussed the effects of extending the state of emergency amidst the retention of tens of legislations and military orders, connected to what is called ‘war on terrorism’ and action against the entrance of immigrants to Israel.

Haaretz said that the extension of the state of emergency means an extension of the power to propose more emergency legislations and giving acting power for a lot of the legal settlements connected to the state of emergency.

According to the newspaper, Israel is trying to continue using emergency orders instead of official laws.
