Quartet will recognize a consensus government that excludes Hamas, Israeli sources claim

Israeli political sources claimed Sunday that the International Quartet Committee for Peace in the Middle East would recognize a future Palestinian consensus government that does not include members of Hamas in it.

The sources told Israel’s public radio Sunday that the Quartet would issue a statement in the near future “that would make it difficult for Israel in its quest to convince the international community to boycott the new Palestinian government.”

They sources expected, however, that the international Quartet will demand the new government to recognize Israel’s right to exist and the previous agreements signed with it.

Fatah and Hamas have agreed to form a transitional government of technocrats to supervise the upcoming elections.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas began consultations to form the government, inviting both movements to propose candidates to be included in the new government.
