May 20, 2014 at 12:27 pm

Gunmen have attacked the UAE embassy in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, leading to the departure of the Emirati Ambassador and the Embassy staff, Libyan activists reported.

According to Libyan sources the attack comes as Libyan forces accuse the UAE of supporting retired General Khalifa Haftar and his National Libyan army coup attempts; last February as well as his current one in Benghazi and Tripoli.

Arabi21 news site quoted unnamed sources as saying that the UAE supports former Prime Minister and Head of the Libyan National Forces Alliance, Mahmoud Jibril on the political level who opposes the elected National Conference and General Haftar to be its military man in Libya.

Meanwhile, the UAE has denied all accusations of involvement in Haftar’s coup attempts.
