UN calls for immediate halt to military action in Libya

May 20, 2014 at 11:57 am

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya, UNSMIL called on Monday for all Libyan parties to immediately cease all military actions and address differences through political means instead of violence and threats to the country and citizen’s security.

UNSMIL expressed deep concern over the current violence in the country, particularly the attacks on state institutions and citizens.

The mission condemned the dangerous security deterioration in the Eastern region and expressed regret over the high number of civilian casualties.

The statement called on the Libyan government to immediately and quickly address the state of lawlessness in the country, including the series of assassinations targeting the army, police and judiciary and to develop a comprehensive security plan with the participation of the political, security and civilian forces.
