An Egyptian court handed down life sentences against 54 opponents of the July 3 military coup, judicial sources told news agencies Wednesday.
The defendants have been convicted of taking part in violent protests and membership in a terrorist organisation.
The same court sentenced 104 defendants, including three female university students, to 10 years in prison on the same charges.
In November, Egyptian authorities issued a law that criminalized protesting without official permit. Rights groups and activists criticized the law as restrictive and politically motivated.
