Families looking for female students forcibly disappeared in Egypt

May 25, 2014 at 12:57 pm

Egyptian police arrested a number of female students on their way to attend an exam at Ain Shams University on Thursday and held them at an undisclosed location, their families reported.

According to the family of one of the disappeared students, Hanaa Youssef Hamed (21 years old), the students have been initially locked up at the Waily Police Directorate. However, when their families went there, they were told that the students had been deported to a secret detention centre, and that their names had not been officially registered as detainees. None of the students have appeared before a prosecution, nor faced any charges.

The family of Hanaa lodged a complaint with the public prosecutor regarding her forced disappearance. They stress that Hanaa has no political affiliation, and is not politically active.
