Egyptian anti-coup petition claims to have collected 14 million signatures

An Egyptian youth campaign claims it gathered 14 million signatures to bring down the post-coup regime in Egypt.

The Batil (Illegitimate) campaign founders said in a statement that they aim at collecting 30 million signatures that call for ending the military coup in Egypt

The campaign said that many more Egyptians oppose the coup but were not able to sign the petition due to the restrictive environment imposed by the military authorities.

“All measures taken by the coup authorities are illegitimate, particularly the farce otherwise known as presidential elections which have been rigged in advance in favour of the military candidate,” the statement added.

The campaign called on Egyptians to take to the streets in black, “as a symbol of mourning the will of the nation and its victims.” It called for raising the slogan: “the coffins of our martyrs are more than your ballots.”

Egyptians turned out to the polls on Monday for the first presidential elections since the July 3 military coup.
