Progressive Forces Reject Egypt's Sham Elections

May 27, 2014 at 12:08 pm

A letter signed by international figures has called for a return to genuine democracy in Egypt and a rejection of the current presidential elections.

Letter:

The current military regime in Egypt is holding elections to enshrine Abdel Fatah El Sisi as President.

These elections are happening in a climate of fear, repressions, and while the political opposition languishes in prison.

Since the coup of July 3rd the military regime has been responsible for 7000 deaths of innocent civilians, the imprisonment of over 23,000 dissidents, as well as, torture, disappearances and death sentences by the judiciary against over 1000 people

We the undersigned oppose all attempts to legitimise, both domestically and internationally the military coup in Egypt.

We call for the release of all political prisoners.

Freedom of assembly and freedom of speech.

To hold accountable all those responsible for crimes against protestors.

We call for the return of a genuine democracy to Egypt – free from the military in politics, so that Egyptians can realise the aims of the January 25th revolution for freedom, dignity and social justice.
