Egypt: Prisoners publish names of 60 police officials complicit in torture

The Supreme Prison Strike Committee published a list of 60 police officers and security officials in 12 Egyptian governorates allegedly complicit in the torturing of political detainees since the July 3 military coup.

In a statement Monday, the committee said the list is the first part in a series of lists that would expose those who tortured and mistreated detainees in Egyptian prisons and police headquarters.

The committee, which represents thousands of hunger striking prisoners who declared an “uprising” last month, said that the detainees have started the “battle of empty stomachs” as a sacrifice for the sake of “the freedom of the nation.”

Topping the list of alleged torturers is the chairman of Alexandria Police Headquarters General Amin Ezz Aldin, Fayoum Police Headquarters chairman Hassan Shehata, and chairman of criminal investigations department in Fayoum Nasser Al-Abd. The list also includes 20 officers affiliated to the notorious disbanded state security apparatus, now known as the National Security Apparatus. The military governor of Beir Al-Abd town in Sinai Hossam al-Masry is also among those accused of torture.

Over 40,000 detainees in Egyptian prisons have started a hunger strike in what is dubbed as the “second prisons uprising.”

The ministry of interior attempted to force prisoners to break their strike, using torture and beating, which led to the death of prisoner Mohamed Abdullah.
