New survey: Food insecurity affects 1 in 3 Palestinian households

June 4, 2014 at 10:19 am

A third of Palestinian households in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, around 1.6 million people, are food insecure, according to an annual survey by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) and UN agencies.

The disparity between conditions in the West Bank and Gaza continued, with the former experiencing food insecurity levels of 19 percent, while in the latter, levels remained at 57 percent. Both figures are unchanged from 2012.

The survey also found that “the majority of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank spend more than half their income on food.”

The agencies concluded that “food insecurity in Palestine can only be sustainably improved by addressing the root causes of the crisis, such as the ongoing blockade on Gaza and access restrictions in the West Bank.”

The results of the 2013 survey were announced Tuesday in a joint press release by the PCBS, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
