US Senator: Israel might strike Iran 'in a matter of months'

Tea Party Republican Senator Ted Cruz said he believes Israel could attack Iran’s nuclear facilities in a few months if the country’s nuclear programme is not halted, Israeli newspaper Haaretz said yesterday.

Speaking to the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, an American based Jewish think tank, on Tuesday, Cruz said: “In my view, [Iranian Supreme Leader Ali] Khamenei believes there is no credible deterrence from the United States, there’s not realistic risk of significant consequence for moving forward with their nuclear development”

He continued: “I think if it comes down to it, I have real confidence that the nation of Israel will act to preserve her national security, even if this administration will not act first and that could happen sooner rather than later — that could happen in a matter of months.”

During his meeting with the Israeli think tank he attacked the American President Barack Obama, saying he believes Netanyahu is working harder to defend American interests.
