The former presidential candidate in the recent Egyptian elections, Hamdeen Sabahi, may be investigated after being accused of collaborating with foreign countries for the purpose of destabilising Egypt, attempting to destroy the image of the Egyptian state before the international community and receiving money from the states of Libya and Iraq, official sources said.

The sources confirmed that the Attorney General for Alexandria Appeal Prosecutions has referred the complaint against Sabahi to the Attorney General’s office for investigation.

According to Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr, Mohammed Saad Khairallah has filed a complaint accusing Sabahi of received money from abroad in return for providing those countries with information about the state of Egypt for the purpose of harming Egypt.

In his complaint, Khairallah demanded “urgent investigations about the allegation that he is collaborating with a foreign country, a crime mentioned in Article 77 of the Egyptian Penal Code, as well as arresting him and banning him from traveling abroad until the investigations come to an end.”
