Egyptian public and private universities witnessed a number of protest activities on Sunday in solidarity with detained students and calling for an end to the military coup.

October 6 University students staged a protest in solidarity with jailed Al Jazeera correspondent Abdullah Elshamy, a graduate of the same university in custody since August 14. The students raised pictures of Elshamy, and banners that read: “Journalism is not a crime.”

In Zagazig University in the governorate of Sharqiya, students marched on campus, chanting anti-coup slogans and calling for the release of dozens of colleagues, and condemning the torture which many of them have suffered at detention centers in Zagazig and Ismailia.

Similarly, Fayoum University students held a number of events condemning the arrest of five colleagues in less than a week and preventing them from attending their exams.

The Students Against the Coup movement in the Upper Egypt governorate of Suhag held a “human chain protest” calling for the release of detained students, and raising pictures of their detained colleagues.

In Helwan University, students distributed leaflets and posters to raise awareness of fellow students regarding violations committed against detained female students in Qanater prison last week. They called for “an uprising in the streets and squares until the end of the coup and the release of all political detainees.”
