Scholars accuse Al-Maliki of Iranian agenda to ignite civil war in Iraq

The Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq has accused Nouri Al-Maliki of following an “Iranian agenda” to ignite civil war in the country. The group also holds the prime minister responsible for crimes committed in Babil against civilians.

The association said that when Al-Maliki’s government and its security forces and militias fail to confront rebels in the field, they are taking advantage of a religious legal opinion (fatwa) to commit sectarian genocide against unarmed civilians. This, it believes, is done in order to satisfy the Shiites in southern Iraq to cover up the government’s failure, but “in reality the central authorities are carrying out an Iranian agenda to ignite civil war in Iraq”.

According to the scholars, “everyone” knows that the Shiite fatwa to fight the rebels actually serves nobody’s interest and that religious organisations during such difficult times should show wisdom in dealing with crises. “This is to ensure that the country does not slide into even more chaos,” they asserted, “and bear the consequences of crimes committed by others.”
