Released Al-Jazeera journalist: 'I was tortured in prison'

June 18, 2014 at 11:38 am

Abdullah Elshamy, the Al-Jazeera journalist released on Tuesday, told reporters that he was tortured in prison, and that he would not be silent regarding the violations committed against him.

Elshamy called on all journalists to support him in his struggle against tyranny and corruption.

Egyptian Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat approved on Monday the decision to release Elshamy and 12 others pending investigations in the trial dubbed in the media as “the Rabaa protest dispersal”, citing health conditions of the defendants.

Elshamy’s release came 10 months following his arrest last August 14 during the violent dispersal of the Rabaa sit-in. He went on a hunger strike from January 21 until his release, protesting against his arbitrary arrest.
