June 19, 2014 at 10:24 am

Abdullah Elshamy embraces his family amidst a frenzy of journalists and photographers who are trying to capture the moments after his release from Nasr City Police Station. He was detained while working for Al-Jazeera covering the events as they unfolded during the storming of the Rabaa Al-Adawiya Square protest on August 14, 2013.

Abdullah Elshamy, Al-Jazeera correspondent, spoke to the journalists present at his release saying: “Freedom is promised to he who remains loyal to it. Praise be to Allah. God does not leave those who fight for the truth. What happened will never cause us or any journalists to stop [our work].”

He pointed out that he gained his freedom after 309 days of incarceration. He further explained: “Despite all the lies and all the restrictions and despite the solitary confinement I have come out.” He insisted he was in detention and not in prison, saying: “I was a journalist who was kidnapped while doing his work.”

He disclosed that he lost 45 kilogrammes in weight, concluding: “Praise be to Allah. He who has faith and is patient then God will provide victory.”
