June 19, 2014 at 9:54 am

The health condition of Mohamed Soltan, son of Islamic scholar and Muslim Brotherhood member Salah Soltan, has deteriorated due to his continuing hunger strike which entered its 145th day, resulting in pulmonary embolism , Anadolu news agency reported.

According to Soltan’s lawyer Sayed Nasr, medical tests undergone by Soltan, an Egyptian-American, revealed sharp deterioration in his health and severe drought in his body.

Nasr told Anadolu that Soltan had refrained from drinking water for the past 4 days, in an escalation of his hunger strike to protest against his unjust detention and the trumped-up charges against him.

Soltan has been transferred from Tora prison hospital to Al-Qasr Al-Ainy hospital since June 10, after the government-run National Council on Human Rights recommend his transfer citing his deteriorating health.

According to a report by NCHR, Soltan has started his hunger strike sinceJanuary 26. The percentage of sugar in his blood has reached 41% (the natural percentage being between 65 and 110); the functions of his liver and kidneys remain intact; urine analysis showed the presence of acetone in urine by 3+, indicating extreme hunger.

Soltan was arrested from his home last August 27. He is tried on charges of “setting up an operations room with the aim of confronting the state.”
