UN chief slams use of barrel bombs against civilians in Syria

June 20, 2014 at 10:55 am

The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today strongly criticised the Syrian regime’s continued aerial strikes and heavy shelling using barrel bombs against civilians, the Anadolu news agency reported.

On Wednesday more than 50 people were killed in an attack on a camp for internally displaced people in southern Syria.

The statement said the secretary-general “reiterates his condemnation of the indiscriminate use of any weapon against civilians, which contravenes international humanitarian and human rights law. All civilians must be protected in any situation.”

The UN chief appealed once again “to all Syrian sides to end the violence and focus on a peaceful, political solution to the conflict”.
