Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi issued a presidential decree that gives him the power to assign heads of universities, presidential spokesman Ihab Badawi said.
According to the decree, the minister of higher education presents three candidates for each of the positions of university head and faculty deans.
The candidates are to be selected by a committee – appointed by the minister of higher education following the approval of the Supreme Council of Universities.
University heads will be appointed for a renewable term of four-years.
The decree also states that the President of the Republic can remove the heads of universities if they do not fulfil their duties and responsibilities, based on a demand by the supreme council of universities.
