Turkey has ranked fourth on the list of the world’s largest humanitarian donors, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said yesterday.

A statement by the ministry said that the number of donor countries in the field of humanitarian aid has risen to 27 after Turkey joined the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

It added that Turkey “has become an influential player in the field of bilateral humanitarian assistance,” expressing confidence that the UN’s multilateral system “would be able to contribute to addressing complex humanitarian problems,” and vowing to continue support for UN agencies in this regard.

The statement said that the selection of Istanbul as the host country of the first humanitarian summit in history, scheduled for May 2016, is “evidence of the privileged status Turkey has reached in the field of international humanitarian assistance.”
