Palestinian Authority clamps down on popular resistance in Nablus

July 7, 2014 at 11:40 am

Palestinian Authority (PA) security services confronted on Sunday dozens of Palestinian youths trying to protest against the presence of Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus, Palestine Online news website reported.

According to witnesses, clashes erupted in wake of the PA’s attempt to suppress a Palestinian demonstration against the Israeli settlers, who descend upon Nablus every week to perform Talmudic rituals in the Tomb of Yousef.

The PA security services wanted to prevent the demonstrators from throwing stones, fireworks and Molotov cocktails at the settlers.

The demonstrators ended up throwing stones at the PA security services instead.

No casualties among the demonstrators or the security staff were reported.

Ever since three Israeli settlers were found dead after 20 days of an extensive military operation to find them in Hebron and the nearby suburbs, Israeli settlers have been carrying out nationalist attacks against Palestinians in several areas of the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem.

One such attack resulted in a Palestinian boy being burned alive in Jerusalem. His death sparked a massive wave of demonstrations by Palestinians, who have now formed popular committees for the protection of their properties and families.
