Pro-June 30 intellectuals call for repeal of Egyptian protest law

July 7, 2014 at 1:56 pm

Hundreds of Egyptian intellectuals and celebrities have called on the coup government to overturn the protest law issued last year due to its restrictive provisions that have led to the jailing of prominent activists.

Some 700 public figures, all of whom supported the June 30 protests last year that led to the ouster of democratically-elected President Mohamed Morsi, signed a statement urging the government to repeal the law and respect the right to peaceful assembly. Victims of the protest law have mostly been activists who took part in both the 2011 revolution and the June 30 protests.

Signatories of the statement included two ex-ministers of culture, Emad Abu Ghazi and Shaker Abdel-Hamid, as well as novelists Sonallah Ibrahim and Ahdaf Soueif.
