Egypt destroys 19 tunnels on the Gaza border

July 9, 2014 at 1:51 pm

The Egyptian army said it had successfully destroyed 19 tunnels in the Sinai Peninsula on the border with the Gaza Strip.

“The Border Guard in North Sinai have destroyed 19 tunnels on the border with the Palestinian Gaza Strip,” Brigadier General Abdelaziz Ghonim said on his Facebook page.

“The Border Guard of the Second Army arrested two wanted criminals and found two unlicensed cars, including a car that had 100 kilogrammes of cannabis,” he added.

Since September 2013, joint forces from the army and the police have waged an extensive military campaign in pursuit of terrorists and criminals in a number of governorates, including North Sinai. Authorities say terrorists in the Sinai and other governorates are behind the armed attacks that have targeted police and army officers as well as security premises after the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
