Washington seeks to broker cease-fire between Gaza, Israel

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said on Friday that the US is seeking to coordinate a cease-fire between Israel and Gaza similar to the one reached in November 2012, brokered by then president Mohamed Morsi.

Earnest said that Palestinians and Israelis passed through a similar situation in 2012, and that the US at the time used its leverage with countries in the region, such as Egypt and Turkey, to faciliate a cease fire.

He pointed out that calm serves the interests of the US, Palestine, Israel and all countries in the region.

US President Barack Obama phoned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, and offered mediation for the sake of a cease-fire, according to a statement by the White House.
