Egypt lifts election ban on Mubarak party

July 15, 2014 at 10:16 am

The Cairo Appeals Court for Urgent Matters overturned a decision to ban leading members of former President Honsi Mubarak’s dissolved National Democratic Party (NDP) from running in parliamentary elections.

The decision is expected to trigger widespread anger among the Egyptian people, especially those who took part in the January 25 revolution against Mubarak’s regime.

The court said that the evidence does not prove NDP members were corruption, and that NDP leaders have not been convicted of any criminal offenses that would disqualify them from running for parliament.

Forces which took part in the January 25 revolution, including the Muslim Brotherhood, have repeatedly voiced their concerns following the July 3 military coup that members of the old authoritarian regime would return to politics.
