Peres: Israel welcomes any new ceasefire initiative by UN chief

Israel President Shimon Peres announced that Israel welcomes any new ceasefire initiative proposed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Israeli National Radio reported Peres as saying, during his visit to the family of soldier Gilad Jacob who was killed in Gaza: “If the UN chief proposed a serious ceasefire initiative, Israel will gladly respond to it.”

Ban arrived in Israel from Cairo to discuss ways to stop the Israeli offensive in Gaza which has been ongoing for more than two weeks.

US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived to Cairo and met with the Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi for the same purpose.
