Morsi supporters commemorate anniversary of 'Memorial Statue Massacre'

July 27, 2014 at 7:03 pm

Dozens of supporters of the ousted president Mohamed Morsi held a brief protest in front of the Memorial Statue in Nasr City neighborhood in Cairo on Saturday to commemorate a massacre that occurred in the same place last year.

The protest only lasted for 15 minutes to avoid police crackdown, Anadolu reported.

The protesters called for retribution for the victims of the massacre, at least 80, and demanded an end to military rule.

On July 27 2013, police forces killed at least 80 protesters and injured 300 others in its attempt to break up a sit-in by anti-coup protesters.

The Anti-Coup National Alliance has called for protests during the Eid break, which it dubbed as “the Eid of martyrs”, in preparation for the “August 14 Uprising” on the first anniversary of the August 14 Rabaa Massacre.

Since the army’s overthrow of elected president Mohamed Morsi last summer, his supporters have been staging daily protests calling for his reinstatement and an end to military rule.
