Egypt's Eid sermons call for Gaza support

A devastating Israeli military onslaught on the Gaza Strip has dominated mosque sermons in Egypt on the first day of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

In the main sermon at Cairo’s Al-Azhar mosque, the preacher called for supporting the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which has been reeling under unabated Israeli attacks for three weeks now.

Similar calls for support for the embattled Gaza Strip were also reported in several mosques across the Arab country.

Meanwhile, supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi staged several rallies following the Eid prayer in solidarity with the beleaguered Palestinian territory.

At least 1035 Palestinians have been killed and more than 6000 others injured in relentless Israeli attacks since July 7.

Israel claims that the military offensive aims at undermining the ability of Gaza’s resistance movements to launch rocket attacks.

At least 46 Israelis – 43 soldiers and three civilians – have also been killed since the hostilities began.

The Israeli offensive – codenamed “Protective Edge” – is the self-proclaimed Jewish state’s third major offensive against the densely populated Gaza Strip – home to 1.8 million Palestinians – within the last six years.
