August 4, 2014 at 2:09 pm

The Palestine Committee at the Non-Aligned Movement held an emergency meeting today to discuss the deteriorating conditions in the Gaza Strip, the Anadolu news agency reported.

The meeting was attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in addition to the foreign ministers of Palestine, Lebanon, Venezuela, Bangladesh, Sudan, Uganda and Iran. Other countries were represented by their deputy foreign ministers.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif had earlier called on members of the Palestine Committee to convene in the aftermath of the continued Israeli aggression on Gaza, which has claimed over 1,800 Palestinian lives.

Based on Zarif’s invite, 50 member states took part in the meeting.

A statement is due to be issued at the end of the meeting, Anadolu said.

The Palestine Committee was founded in 1983. It includes among its member states Algeria, Egypt, Bangladesh, Cuba, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Senegal, South Africa, Colombia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Iran chairs the current session of the committee.
